Accessible Mobile Apps with AI: The RapidNative Way

In 2024, the WebAIM Million report scanned a million home pages and found that 96% had detectable accessibility failures. The second failure mode is subtler. Even when an AI tool emits real React Native, the model is rewarded for visual fidelity, not semantics. Pressables are rendered as <View> with an onPress. Icons are unlabeled. Decorative images are exposed to screen readers; functional images are hidden from them. Touch targets shrink to 32 points because the design looked tighter that way. The output looks beautiful in the preview and fails the first time a real screen-reader user touches it.
The third failure mode is testing. Most AI builders show you a web preview. A web preview cannot run VoiceOver. It cannot test Dynamic Type. These are not abstract risks. The European Accessibility Act now requires consumer apps in scope to meet EN 301 549 (which mirrors WCAG 2.1 AA) at the time of sale. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services finalized a rule that requires WCAG 2.1 AA conformance for HHS-funded mobile apps starting 2026. Apple's App Store guidelines have always recommended Accessibility Inspector checks; in practice, App Tracking Transparency and accessibility findings are now common rejection reasons in 2026 reviews.
What "Accessible" Actually Means on Mobile
Mobile accessibility is a different surface area from web accessibility. The WCAG criteria translate, but the implementation moves from ARIA attributes to platform-specific APIs. In a React Native app, the practical baseline looks like this:

That's the floor. Apps that pass an audit do all ten. The honest truth about AI-generated React Native — including from RapidNative — is that you cannot assume the model has hit all ten on the first pass. Notice the model also added hitSlop and hid the decorative image — both accessibility wins it inferred from the request. That's not magic; it's a model that has the full RN API in its grammar, scoped tightly enough that it can think about a single element instead of a screen.
2. Real-Device Testing with VoiceOver and TalkBack
You cannot meaningfully test mobile accessibility in a browser. The web preview shows you a phone-shaped frame; it does not run UIAccessibility. The only way to know whether your "Add to cart" button actually announces as a button is to enable VoiceOver on a physical iPhone and swipe through the screen.
