Step 1: Your App Runs Live Inside a Canvas IFrame

The preview in RapidNative isn't a static screenshot or a rendered mockup. It's your actual React Native app, running live inside an iframe embedded in the editor canvas.

This is important. Because the preview is a live execution environment, it can do things that static previews cannot — including detecting which element was clicked and tracing it back to its source code.

When you interact with the canvas, the app running inside the iframe intercepts those events.

Step 2: The IFrame Posts a Message with Source Location

When you click an element, the app inside the iframe posts a message to the parent editor window:

That path value is not a component name or an element ID. It's a precise source-code address: the filename (app/(tabs)/index.tsx), the line number (42), and the column (5) where that element is defined in your project's code.

Step 3: Layer Resolution and Redux State Update

The editor's MessageManager — a message broker that handles all iframe-to-editor communication — receives the hoverElement event. It then calls back into the iframe:

This RPC call retrieves the full element metadata from the running app, then dispatches a selectLayer action to update the editor's Redux state. From this point forward, the entire editor knows: there is a selected element, and it lives at a specific file and line in your project.

A Redux selector derives selectedLayerPath from selectedLayer.path, making this value available throughout the editor UI.

Step 4: The Selection Badge Appears

In the chat interface, a small badge appears above the input field showing the selected element's path — something like app/(tabs)/index.tsx:42:5. This is your visual confirmation that point-and-edit is active. The AI will target exactly this element.

You can clear the selection at any time by clicking the X on the badge. Doing so returns to whole-screen editing mode, where your next prompt applies to the full screen.

Step 5: Context Extraction — The Most Important Step

When you type your edit prompt and hit send, something happens before the AI ever sees your message: the editor extracts a focused window of code from the selected element's file.

The extractFileCodeBase function parses the selected path:

It then loads the file content from the Redux store and slices out approximately 5 lines before and after the target line. For an element at line 42, you'd get roughly lines 37–47 — just the code immediately surrounding the component definition.

This extracted snippet becomes the "filesContext" sent to the AI. The AI doesn't see your whole project. It sees the precise section of code that corresponds to the element you clicked.

This is the architectural insight that makes point-and-edit so effective: the AI gets a surgical 11-line window, not a 500-line file.

Step 6: The AI Generates a Targeted Edit

The final payload sent to /api/user/ai/generate-v2 looks like this:
