How to Debug a React Native Error
Read the first error, not the last line
Red screens and build logs often end with a generic failure. Scroll up to the first real error message and the top frames of the stack trace that point into your own files.
Work out which layer failed
Is it Metro failing to bundle, JavaScript crashing at runtime, a native module missing, or Xcode / Gradle failing to compile? Each layer has different fixes, so naming it first saves time.
Check how you run the app
Expo Go, a development build and a bare project behave differently. Many "module not found" crashes only happen in Expo Go because it cannot load custom native code.
Clear caches before deeper changes
Restart Metro with npx expo start --clear. Stale caches cause a surprising number of resolution and transform errors after moving files or changing Babel config.
Align dependency versions
Run npx expo-doctor and npx expo install --fix. Version mismatches between the Expo SDK and native libraries are behind many build and runtime crashes.
Common React Native & Expo Errors
The errors developers hit most often, and where the fix usually lies.
| Error | Usual Fix |
|---|---|
| Unable to resolve module | Install the package, fix the path or filename casing, clear the Metro cache |
| TurboModuleRegistry.getEnforcing(...) could not be found | Use a development build instead of Expo Go, then rebuild |
| VirtualizedLists should never be nested | Move content into ListHeaderComponent / ListFooterComponent |
| Text strings must be rendered within a <Text> | Wrap the text, or make && conditions real booleans |
| Invalid hook call | Call hooks only in components; check for duplicate React with npm ls react |
| Each child in a list should have a unique "key" | Pass a stable keyExtractor or key, not the index |
| Unable to load script | Start Metro; on Android USB run adb reverse tcp:8081 tcp:8081 |
| pod install failed / Gradle build failed | Align versions with npx expo install --fix, read the first error in the build log |
Expo Go vs Development Builds
Expo Go is a fixed sandbox
It ships with the native modules in the Expo SDK and nothing else. It is the fastest way to start, but any library with its own native code will fail to load.
A development build is your own Expo Go
Install expo-dev-client and build with npx expo run:ios, npx expo run:android, or eas build. It includes every native library in your project and keeps fast refresh.
Rebuild when native code changes
Adding or upgrading a native library, or changing config plugins in app.json, needs a new development build. JavaScript-only changes do not.
Use prebuild instead of hand-editing
With Continuous Native Generation, the ios and android folders are generated from app config. Regenerate them with npx expo prebuild --clean rather than editing them by hand.
