Most AI app builders treat editing as a guessing game. You type "make the button blue," and the AI combs through your entire codebase trying to figure out which button you mean. The result is either wrong, or the AI regenerates the whole file when you only needed one line changed.

RapidNative's point-and-edit feature solves this with surgical precision. This article breaks down the engineering behind it: how the system knows which element you clicked, how it communicates across iframe boundaries, and how it delivers that context to the AI model.

Why Visual Editing Is Technically Hard

A running React Native app and its source code exist in fundamentally different worlds. The source code is text — files with lines and columns. The running app is a rendered tree of components with positions, sizes, and visual states. Bridging these two worlds is the core engineering challenge.

The naive approach is to show users a file tree and let them click a filename. But that's not visual. The better approach is to let users click directly on the rendered element in the preview. The hard part is translating "the user clicked at coordinates (245, 390)" into "that's line 42 of app/(tabs)/index.tsx."

Most tools skip this entirely. RapidNative's architecture solves it in three layers.


The Three-Layer Architecture

The point-and-edit system works across three distinct layers:

  1. The Preview Layer — A sandboxed iframe that runs the bundled React Native app via Expo Web. This is what users see and interact with.
  2. The Editor Layer — The main RapidNative editor interface, outside the iframe, which handles state, chat, and AI requests.
  3. The AI Layer — The model that receives code context and generates targeted edits.

These layers can't directly share memory. The iframe is sandboxed. State lives in the editor. The AI only knows what it's told. The challenge is getting the right information across each boundary, accurately and efficiently.


Layer 1: React Fiber Introspection and the bx-path System

The first layer is how the preview knows which element the user is hovering or clicking.

When RapidNative bundles your app for the preview iframe, it injects a data-bx-path attribute into every rendered element. The format of this attribute is:

filename:line:column

For example, a <TouchableOpacity> at line 42 of app/(tabs)/index.tsx gets the attribute:

This is the bx-path coordinate system — source-level coordinates embedded directly into the rendered DOM. Every visible element carries its exact location in the source code.

When a user moves their mouse over the preview, a script injected into the iframe uses React Fiber introspection to traverse the component tree and find the element with a data-bx-path attribute closest to the cursor. It extracts the path, calculates the element's bounding box (x, y, width, height), and sends a message to the parent editor:

This approach sidesteps a common problem: React components can wrap or nest deeply, making it unclear which component a user "meant" to click. By using the data-bx-path attribute system with Fiber traversal, the selection always resolves to the component that has explicit source coordinates — never to a wrapper div or layout helper.


Layer 2: PostMessage RPC — The Iframe-to-Editor Bridge

The iframe is sandboxed, so it can't directly call editor functions or write to editor state. All communication happens through the browser's postMessage API.

RapidNative implements a full Remote Procedure Call (RPC) protocol over postMessage. This isn't just one-way event dispatch — the editor can also call functions inside the iframe and wait for responses.

When the iframe dispatches hoverElement or selectLayer, the editor's MessageManager receives it and dispatches the appropriate Redux action:

  • hoverElementsetCurrentElementEventData(payload) — updates hover state
  • selectLayerselectLayer(payload) — sets the selected element in Redux

The RPC pattern also allows the editor to query the iframe. When a user clicks, the editor calls messageManager.executeRPCInApp('getLayerById', layerPath) to retrieve extended layer metadata — things like computed styles, children count, and component type. This bidirectional communication is what allows the editor to display accurate element information without guessing.

Visual Feedback: Zoom-Aware Highlighting

Once the editor receives hover or selection data, it renders two overlay components on top of the preview canvas — not inside the iframe, but in the editor layer above it.

CurrentComponentHighlighter — shows a blue outline while the user is hovering. It uses the bounding box from the hover payload, scaled to the current zoom level. The outline width is computed as 1 / zoomLevel, keeping it visually consistent whether you're zoomed in at 200% or out at 50%.

SelectedComponentHighlighter — shows a more prominent blue outline when an element is clicked. This component also renders an inline popover below the element with:

  • A text input ("Ask AI for quick changes...")
  • A send button
  • A "Copy Code" button to copy the component's source
  • A toggle to open the inline code editor

Both components use the element's bounding box coordinates (x, y, width, height) translated to editor canvas coordinates. The precision here matters — if the highlight doesn't land exactly on the element, users lose confidence that their changes will target the right component.


Layer 3: Surgical AI Edits With ±5 Lines of Context

Here's where the architecture pays off for AI precision. When a user types a prompt in the selected-element popover or in the main chat input, RapidNative doesn't send the entire file to the AI. It extracts a targeted snippet.

The selected layer path (app/(tabs)/index.tsx:42:5) contains the filename, line number, and column. The sendMessage thunk in the editor parses this and calls extractFileCodeBase(), which:

  1. Retrieves the full file content from Redux
  2. Finds line 42
  3. Extracts 5 lines before and after (lines 37–47)
  4. Marks line 42 with a ^^ indicator so the AI knows the exact target

The resulting code snippet sent to the AI looks something like:

The ^^ annotation tells the AI: "this is the exact element to modify." Everything else is context to help the model understand the surrounding structure.

This approach has two major benefits:

  • Token efficiency: Instead of sending 300 lines, the AI receives 11 lines. Smaller context = faster responses and lower cost.
  • Edit precision: The AI doesn't need to infer which component the user means. It's told directly, with surrounding context for structural awareness.

The system also handles the distinction between whole-screen context and element-specific context. If the selected path contains no line:column (just a filename), the AI receives the entire file. If it contains coordinates, it receives the targeted snippet. This two-mode behavior handles cases where users want to describe changes to a whole screen versus a specific component.


Redux: The State Machine Behind Selection

The selection state lives in the editor's Redux slice. Key state fields that power the feature:

The inspectMode flag is important: the hover highlights, click highlights, and popover only appear when inspectMode is true. The Complete Click-to-Code Flow

Put it all together, and here's the sequence from a user's mouse hover to an AI edit:

  1. Hover — User moves mouse over the preview. The injected iframe script fires mousemove, traverses the React Fiber tree, finds the element with a data-bx-path attribute nearest the cursor.

  2. Fiber detection — The script extracts the bx-path (app/index.tsx:42:5) and bounding box, dispatches a hoverElement postMessage to the editor.

  3. PostMessage receivedMessageManager picks up the message, dispatches setCurrentElementEventData to Redux.

  4. Hover highlightCurrentComponentHighlighter reads the updated Redux state, renders a blue outline at the element's screen coordinates.

  5. Click — User clicks. The iframe dispatches selectLayer. The editor also calls executeRPCInApp('getLayerById', ...) for extended metadata.

As your app grows — more screens, more components, more nesting — the bx-path system scales with it. Every new component that gets bundled gets coordinates. Every click still resolves to a source location. The AI still receives targeted context, not the entire project.
