Apple App Store commission — the full picture
Apple's fee structure has three tiers. The 30% headline rate applies to standard developers on paid downloads, in-app purchases, and Year-1 subscription revenue. The 15% Small Business Program rate applies to any developer whose annual proceeds across every app stay under $1M. And a 15% Year-2 subscription rate kicks in automatically for subscribers who've been paying continuously for over a year.
Standard 30%
Paid apps, IAP, and Year-1 subscriptions for developers with > $1M annual proceeds.
Small Business Program 15%
Opt-in via App Store Connect. Automatic 15% on every transaction if your annual proceeds stay under $1M.
Year 2+ Subscriptions 15%
Auto-applied after a subscriber has been paying continuously for one year. Clock resets on cancel + resubscribe.
Reader Rule 15% (media apps)
News, magazines, video, audio, and cloud services can qualify for a permanent 15% rate. Requires application.
Google Play commission — auto-tiered, subscription-friendly
Google's structure is simpler and generally more generous. Every subscription is 15% from day one, no program to enroll in. One-time purchases and IAP are 15% on your first $1M/year and 30% above, applied automatically. The threshold resets each January. There is no manual opt-in step for the reduced tier.
Subscriptions — flat 15%
All subscription revenue billed at 15% from day one for every developer, every subscriber, forever. No Year 1 vs Year 2 split.
One-time / IAP — first $1M/year at 15%
Auto-applied per account. Cross $1M mid-year and further sales are billed at 30% until January.
One-time / IAP — above $1M/year at 30%
Matches Apple standard for that portion of the year. Resets each January if the next year stays under.
No program to enroll
Google applies the reduced tier automatically. No paperwork, no waiting period, no risk of missing the deadline.
Pricing tips that respect the commission
Once you know the commission, you can price with intent. Below-cost pricing is a common mistake for new developers — a $2.99 subscription at the 30% rate nets you $2.09 before your own costs. Below are moves that consistently improve net.
Enroll in the Small Business Program on day one
Zero downside if you stay under $1M. If you cross the threshold you re-qualify next year. Doubles your effective price on every transaction.
Prefer annual over monthly subscriptions
Annual pricing gets you Year-2 pricing (15%) faster on Apple, plus lower churn improves LTV. A $99/year plan is usually better economics than $9.99/month even at the same monthly rate.
Price to a whole-dollar net
For a target net of $10 at 30%, price at $14.29. For a target net of $10 at 15%, price at $11.76. Working backwards from net gives predictable revenue.
Web checkout for subscription upgrades where allowed
In some jurisdictions (US after Epic ruling, EU under DMA) you can direct users to a web checkout that bypasses the commission. Adds complexity but recovers the full margin.
Do not use the commission as an excuse to over-price
The commission is baked into the store economy. Users compare your price to competitors also paying the commission. Race to bottom pricing hurts more than the commission does.
